Does anyone know the correct thing to do if a dog is choking this is the 2nd time this has happened to one of my dogs == 2 of mine just inhale their food the 1st time it happened was with Mo with a paul newman heart shaped cookie he just swallowed it and it got logged straight down his throat luckily i check the dogs after i give them something and i found him collapsed on the floor gasping for air == i knew i didn't have time to get him to emergency all i could think to do was stick 2 of my fingers down his throat and pull the cookie out after 3 x's i got it it was difficult and i know this is probably the wrong thing to do i could have logged it further... now i only give tiny cookies or a big cookie broken up == okay to night w/peanut i gave them merrick thanksgiving canned food with the dry i usuallly mush up the food for the little ones but this looked pretty small so i didn't do it ---- big mistake now peanut eats in my bedroom because he gets KBR mixed w/his food anyway he eats pretty quickly and will bark for me to come get him -- he didn't so i go check and he was having a problem not as bad as mo he was able to breath but still making funny sounds so again i stick my -- finger down his throat and he throws up a bunch of canned and kibble which by the way was not chewed at all - anyway this continued for about 15 minutes w/him throwing up to the point of foam coming up -- finally he felt better but i nearly had a heart attack --- tomorrow i will ask the vet what to do but i wanted to post this message for suggestions and maybe a warning for other owners w/dogs that do not chew their food..... |

Reply with quote | #2 | When Hana ate the chocolate brownie I was told to make her drink hydrogen peroxide. After just a few sips she immediately threw up. If that doesn't work, try something like this:
They have CPR classes for dogs and stuff too. I don't really remember how to do it, I need a refresher course.
I hope your little pups are doing well. It must have been really scary to see them on the floor gasping for air! __________________ Andrea, Hana & Harvey. |

Reply with quote | #4 | Oh my gosh that is so scary.....I keep hydrogen peroxide on hand. When Mikan gagged on something I did the same thing as you; open mouth with one hand and hold on and the other hand scoop out. I was lucky I could get whatever was in his mouth. Kenji is scaring me to death sometimes because he puts all sorts of things in his mouth so I'm on guard alot. Gut instinct tells you get it out of their mouth so I too am probably not doing the correct thing. Gosh, you have had some stressful days at your house!!!!! Take care.

Reply with quote | #5 | I wondered about this myself when Buddy choked for a moment on a rawhide chew. I immidiately looked up the heimlick manuver for dogs. Though, I like the hydrogen peroxide suggestion, as I always have some in the house.
Buddy never gets rawhide when I am not there now. It scared me too much! He got it out himself, but still it bothered me. |

Reply with quote | #6 | How frightening. This is the second time I've heard about a dog choking on a Newman heart shaped chew.
I thought I was being silly and over protective because I always mash the girls Merrick canned before I mix it with the kibble. I also love the Wellness small bites kibble as Pugsley's mouth is so tiny.

I THINK THE PEROXIDE I THINK IS USED IF THEY EAT SOMETHING THAT IS BAD --- DON'T THINK IT WILL HELP IF A PET IS ACTUALLY CHOKING ON SOMETHING --- I DON'T THINK I'D GIVE RAWHIDE -- RAWHIDE IS NOT SAFE IT CAN CAUSE BLOCKAGES... |

Stephanie,, i like the wellness small bites tooo though mr. peanut apparently is not chewing that either he will just swallow it == it is so small it doesn't cause a problem but i guess the Merrick thanksgiving canned was so tempting to him even though it looked small too me was too big for him from now on i will mash everything up for everyone i can't take this scary moments too many more times.. I have never or will ever buy a strange shaped dog treat for any of my dogs that was one of the most scary experiences of my life that cookie just went straight down blocking off his air tooo scary.....and i had a hell of a time getting it out.. Thank God i was able to he would not have made it to the emergency vet... |

It might sound silly, but Buddy only chews up the rawhide. Other than the time he choked, I've not seen him actually eat it. I pick it up and throw it away after he has had his fun of chewing. |

Reply with quote | #10 | yes, peroxide for poisonous things but if I couldn't get out something from their throat I'd put a little bit in their mouth. My friend's dog swallowed a round bone and the vet told her to immediately give peroxide and it works within seconds and he did gag it up. Scary, have to act so quickly when choking.
Wystearya-rawhide is what Mikan loved to chew on and didn't choke because he had really tiny teeth and couldn't bite off any rawhide. But, if Buddy has strong good teeth that could tear off bits that's what could slide down his throat and choke him. Just a heads up, check the rawhide after he chews if its rolling off in strips, keep changing sticks or better yet give chewies like nyla bones=very very safe for them. Kenji will never see a rawhide chew his teeth/bite is very strong.

Reply with quote | #11 | I'll make sure to check them extra close. So far though, it doesn't look like he has been able to bite off any pieces.
He had an edible nyla bone, and ate it all in minutes! So, rawhides do keep him entertained longer. But yes, I will be checking closer from now on. |
