Reply with quote | #1 | George is constantly sleeping - I mean if I let him he would sleep 20/24 hours - other then his 1 - 2 periods of puppy nutties that can go anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour - I am getting rather concerned - compared to Clancy (his Shih Tzu brother) who is constantly on the go, he sleeps maybe 12/24 - George turned 2 in May and Clancy turned 1 on 10/22/09 - his blood work from last year was perfect, he eats good, he is pooping fine - any thoughts?

Reply with quote | #2 | Hi Cindy, I'm pretty sure mine sleep the day away also!! When I am home on weekends or vacation I have noticed that they seem to only be awake maybe 4 hours at the most. They have a really hard play time, then a long nap, then repeat that once, maybe twice and are out for the night by 9 pm and don't get up til 6 am weekdays and 8 am weekends. So, yes, I think they sleep a lot!!! __________________ Karen

Reply with quote | #3 | Thanks - I'll tell my husband to stop worrying so much he didn't want a little dog - but now he won't go to bed at night without George tucked under his arm and he has to take his football nap (3rd quarter) with him

Reply with quote | #5 | Since I've been home so much I've gotten a good look into Hana & Harvey's little world. It involves sleeping, peeing & pooping, playing eating... and more sleeping. They sleep more than they do anything else. I'd say George is probably normal __________________ Andrea, Hana & Harvey. |

well, we went from 6 polski owczarek nizinny's (polish lowland sheepdogs) to a chin and a shih tzu and I would love to get another chin but the old girls (13 & 14, the only 2 i have left) would probably be happier if I waited before I bring home another puppy |

Reply with quote | #8 | If I'm active during the day so is mr. nosy - Kenji. My other Chin Mikan was the same. In the winter I hunker down and so did Mikan. I think they kinda go through stages of sleep a lot, play a lot, etc. I don't think it's anything to worry about like you say everything else seems normal. Mikan didn't really sleep that much as power napped a lot. Kenji is still checking out every sound, etc. so he "rests his eyes" and then he's up again........but sleeps really sound (including snoring big time) at night.

I think puppies do sleep a lot, but if you're concerned, just mention it to your vet the next time you're there. If he's eating and pooping normally, and seems bright and lively when he is awake, I wouldn't think there's anything to worry about. __________________ The road to success is always under construction |

Reply with quote | #10 | I'm laughing Debbie! Boop is the same way. If I am busy, she follows me from task to task and must wear herself out!
On less busy days, Sadie and Boop, play and eat and sleep. What I do find interesting is how quickly both can wake up. It's instantaneous, from asleep to alert! |

Reply with quote | #11 | Too funny! I was just thinking about this a minute ago! As we speak little princess is cuddled up on three pillows next to me. Whenever I stand up Bella follows, whenever I want to play Bella plays, whenever I get treats Bella eats, and whenever I sit for long periods of time she sleeps. She is my little watch dog.
Anyway, I think it is completely normal.

Reply with quote | #12 | Bettyboop. I know what you mean about waking up quick. Mikan would be snoring and if I moved in the room he instantly would open his eyes--wide awake mom!!!! I wasn't sleeping. Kenji is on his feet under half a second. Doesn't miss a beat, sleep to on his feet and moving. What a mr. nosy.

Cindy, I agree with everyone here. I do not think you have anything to worry about. I am sure George is just fine. I am home from work today and Ozzy who is 3 years old is always napping. I am pretty sure this is what he does when I am working, too. In between napping, I ask him if he wants to go outside and, he cannot run fast enough to the door. I just finished doing some housework, and I feel like taking a nice nap myself with Ozzy. __________________ Ozzy's Mom |

Reply with quote | #14 | I used to worry about how much my girls slept until it dawned on me they don't have too many intellectual pursuits! Besides playing, eating and looking out the window, they can't sit down with a nice book and while away the time. They even tend to take a nap when the TV is on and it's not something that interests them

Spike does that! It's weird. I worry about his eyes drying out! If I notice it I wake him up. I'm mean I guess!! __________________ Karen

I think we are worse - we actually sit here and laugh - it's just hysterical - the girls here at work are always checking to see if he is sleeping or not |

They sleep with their eyes open!!!! That would freak me out!! How do you know they are actually asleep-are they snoring. I've just never seen a dog sleeping with eyes open.
I wonder is they sleepwalk too.lol

Reply with quote | #20 | There was a sleepwalking dog on a show I watched the other day. It was sad and scary, the poor thing ran right into a wall!
Buddy also sleeps most of the time. Though if I move to get up, he is right with me. |
