Reply with quote | #1 | yeah, how often are you feeding snacks? I had Mikan on a pretty regular pattern but with Kenji I'm not sure if the snacks are going to be too much/too often. He didn't like blueberry (antioxidants) treats at all so I took those back to Pet Smart. He likes training treats that are soft and chicken flavored.
Looking for ideas so I can pick something else up for him. Any suggestions? Also, how many times a day are you giving snacks? He's almost 10 pounds and looks a little skinny - I don't like to feel his bones! He'll be 1 year on Nov. 15th.

Reply with quote | #2 | I never really thought about how many snacks I give the pups. They are spoiled, they get quite a bit. I'll have to pay more attention because now I'm curious how much I give them, lol.
I've started dehydrating my own fruit for them as treats. So far I've tried apples and I plan on making dried banana and even chicken jerky for them. I'm excited, we just got a dehydrator so I'm playing around with it.
Hana and Harvey LOVE Wellness Pure Rewards Jerky treats, especially the Turkey & Salmon or Chicken & Lamb. They seriously go nuts for them. __________________ Andrea, Hana & Harvey. |

Reply with quote | #3 | Hi, BeBe gets far too many treats in my opinion - her daddy spoils her rotten and is always slipping her a little something off his plate (keeping in mind of course, that some foods are dangerous for dogs). Normally, if she finishes her dog food, she gets a little cooked beef afterwards (she loves any cooked meat, but is intolerant of chicken).
She also loves little soft dog treats called "Natures Menu"; not sure if you can get these in the U.S.
I think as long as their weight is ok and it's not making them fussy, you can give healthy treats when you like.

Reply with quote | #4 | The girls get a Wellness biscuit and a Wellness jerky treat in the a.m. plus one Bright Bite each. When we're in the bedroom and I am using the make up trowel to get ready for work, they each get three Charlie Bear turkey liver and cranberry treats. These are little tiny button thingies that are only 3 calories each. Once in awhile a bil-jac liver treat -they have tiny training size ones. They go crazy for raw bell pepper and sugar snap peas. Also potato chips.
I don't think begging for part of my breakfast and dinner counts as treats for them - they just think it's their due!
They are three now. Their first year I went kind of crazy with treats and have cut back because each were close to their maximum weight. Pugsley Japanese Chiin is about 13 lbs and Willow Lhasa Apso 15-16 |

Reply with quote | #6 | Mine think that they MUST have a bite of whatever I am eating. Since I usually eat healthy snacks I give them tiny bites. They like most fruits, almonds, and veggies (especially green beans and carrots). Their daddy has spoiled them so bad!! He gives them bites of his pizza crusts on Friday nites. Now they think anything that is triangular is pizza!! For actual dog treats they like Wellness (little squares) and Natural Balance Grain Free dog bones, the Sweet Potato & Fish ones. They don't get them on any regular schedule. __________________ Karen

Reply with quote | #8 | I wouldn't go overboard on snacks Debbie!
My two are fed twice a day, and get occassional treats for good behavior (my kids and hubby love to teach and reinforce tricks!) I think since the dogs are small it would be easy to overfeed and then have to deal with weight issues.

Reply with quote | #9 | My little one is 6.5 pounds and eats like a horse!! Whenever I eat she eats. She stares at me with those huge eyeballs and I just can't say no.
When she goes to the bathroom she gets a dog treat. Whether it be a greenie, a small bone (her daddy picked out the filet mignon bones, of course), or pizza crackers shaped like bones.
As far as human food goes she gets meat, cheese, apple slices, yogurt, and rarely a little vanilla ice cream or a popsicle. I never thought I would be one of those crazy people that shares a popsicle with their dog...but I am.

My kids get their biscuits in the morning and at night after dinner. And I always have some kind of chewy one available to keep those teeth pearly white. No human food. Is hard enough to keep them happy with their dog food. |

Reply with quote | #11 | Ash363. I know what you mean about sharing food. My other Chin Mikan was like my third hand when eating!!! Bella has grown, she is soooo pretty, and petit where does she put all those treats. lol.
kpparker and mary: I've been trying little bites of carrots-no; cheese-yes; yogurt-yes; apple-no; cream cheese-yes; green beans-sorta no/yes; potato chips-yes; bananas-no way, need to get treats from pet store though...
Thanks, Debbie and Kenji |

Buddy is like that! So, even though I tell him no he always ends up with at least a taste of what I am eating. (As long as it is dog safe, no chocolate for him!)
He loves apples, and I better give him a piece when I am eating one or he will start to whine. lol!
Though, I do make sure he has eaten at least most of his dog food before I will give him my food. I want him to be healthy above all. |

Reply with quote | #14 | Hana is the same way. She's 5 lbs now and she can just eat and eat and eat and eat and eat. It's amazing really. I wish I could do that! __________________ Andrea, Hana & Harvey. |
