Kenji finally barks!!!

Well I know this isn't a big deal............BUT it is to me.

Last night Steve took Kenji for a walk around the neighborhood. The man down the street has a pit bull/mix and when Kenji saw him he did not woo/woo. Steve called me on the cell and said guess what he barked like a great big dog...He hasn't made a sound since August other than when he plays with toys he has a deep husky growl that cracks me up because he is such a woosie.

Out of all the dogs we have run into in the park and around the neighborhood my little guy picks a fight with a pit bull. Kenji rules. He turned one and now he's Mr. Bigstuff!! and I missed it...

Debbie and Mr. Kenji

Forum: Life With Chin

pain???

I don't know what Sweet Pea did last night. She's must have hurt herself jumping off the bed. She doesn't want to lie down flat. She cried out this morning when I went to pet her, letting me know she was in pain. When she walks her tail is down, she has this wide eyed look on her face. I can't tell where she's hurt. I'm thinking her back, I'm not sure. I'm calling the vet, as soon as there open. She's kind of restless.

Jenn

Forum: The Clinic

Eating Chocolate

While I was at work today I get a call from my roommate saying Mitsuko ate his Starbucks brownies he left on the kitchen counter. Each brownie was 2oz each and he had 3 of them, all 3 were missing.

This sounded pretty serious to me and I didn't have any prior knowledge of the effect of dogs eating chocolate other than the fact I know it's bad news and could be fatal. So I left work and called the ER clinic first and they suggested I bring her in, but I managed to snag an appointment at my regular vet instead. I told them what happened and they handed me a care cost estimate:

Emergency Exam..............................$96
IV Catheter and Fluid Intra................$43
Toxiban Administration......................$63
Apomorphine 6Mg............................$21
Hospitalization...................................$82
Doctor Care During Hospitalization....$45
Cerenia Injectable..............................$49

Total: $399

When I saw this bill I actually started bauling. One simple accident and you're suddenly out $400.

The whole time Mitsuko seemed completely normal too. I started looking at the facts and questioning the severity of the situation. When the vet first proposed this to me they thought I said she ate 6oz of unsweetened chocolate, not 6oz of brownies made with unsweetened chocolate. After I told them this they didn't edit their care plan.

The vet did admit Mitsuko wasn't showing signs of excessive chocolate consumption, not even hyperactivity. The only thing she could say was that her heart rate went up when she was giving her the toxiban (obviously because she's scared) and said that you can't really say when symptoms of eating chocolate are going to occur and the worst may not have happened yet.

With everything considered I decided the overnight stay would be a bit excessive, so I texted boyfriend for his thoughts and he concluded the same thing.

So I went home, I had to sign a waiver saying I was leaving against their recommendation for treatment so I wouldn't sue them or something I guess haha. So my bill was $110 for a vet visit (not an emergency one like listed on the original estimate) and for the administering of toxiban.

When I left they told me "good luck" hah. They also warned me she would be really hyper, have increased heart rate, possibly have seizures...but instead she's been sleeping on the couch since we got home.

I did get to learn some things from this whole experience though:
1) Unsweetened chocolate is the worst for dogs, followed by dark chocolate and then milk chocolate.
2) 1 oz of unsweetened chocolate can be fatal for 10lb dogs
3) To induce vomiting on a 10lb dog you should use 2 table spoons and if they don't vomit within 15 minutes give them another table spoon.
4) Never leave chocolate out in your house/apartment. Not even where you think they can't get it. Put that stuff in a container that they can't get into.

Sigh. What a day.

Forum: The Clinic

Neck pain?

Hana has been whimpering a little bit when getting up from naps for the past few days. At first I thought it was her bad knee, but this morning at 2:30am she got up, SCREAMING in pain. She tends to over react to everything (she even screams when someone tries to pet her and she doesn't want them to) but I noticed she could not move her neck to the right. She was holding it to the left and it seemed like whenever she tried moving it to the right, she cried.

The vet isn't open until 8 and of course, Wednesday is the only day they close early, at noon. Matt can't take any more days off work because of how much he took off when I was in the hospital, but he has tomorrow off because he has to drive me to a doctor's appointment. My parents both work all day today. I'm not supposed to drive or carry anything, so if I take her to the clinic by myself I might injure my back (plus if I get in an accident I have narcotics in my system from my pain meds).

Do you think I should bring her to the vet today anyways? I gave her a little Metacam that I have saved from her surgery, but I don't know if it does any good for this. Right now she's sleeping, but I imagine she'll wake up screaming in pain again. I don't know what the right thing to do it. If I wasn't healing from surgery I'd be at the vet's door at 8am when they open.

Forum: The Clinic
