Umbilical Hernias

Ok. My "Spay" thread turned into a hernia thread. I still have a lot of questions regarding umbilical hernias so I'm going to make a new thread, sorry if I'm being redundant.

The woman I got Mitsuko from (which turns out her daughter is a chin breeder) says that umbilical hernias in chins are so common that breeders often use bitches that have umbilical hernias (which is most likely hereditary) and it is not looked down upon. She also says that the hernia does not need to be operated on because it is the nature of vets to always suggest unnecessary surgeries to make money.

Is any of this true? Obviously my vets are going to tell me it needs to be fixed surgically to be on the "safe side" (and to make money), and obviously that breeder is going to tell me it's not a problem and she isn't doing anything wrong by her daughter breeding dogs with an umbilical hernia.

Everyone I've talked to has been blaming someone else for not detecting her umbilical hernia before her spay. The spay clinic blamed my vet clinic, the vet clinic blamed my breeder (and the spay clinic), the breeder blamed my vet clinic.

I still don't know what I'm going to do about this. I'm more inclined to believe that if the hernia was small enough to go undetected in her first physical exam at the vet then why would it pose a threat on her well being now? What are the odds that something could go wrong with her small hernia? Its only about the size of a nickle (which I originally thought was the size of a quarter but I got a better look at it now)

ahhh. help. any information you have to contribute would be appreciated.

Forum: The Clinic

Sleeping alot

George is constantly sleeping - I mean if I let him he would sleep 20/24 hours - other then his 1 - 2 periods of puppy nutties that can go anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour - I am getting rather concerned - compared to Clancy (his Shih Tzu brother) who is constantly on the go, he sleeps maybe 12/24 - George turned 2 in May and Clancy turned 1 on 10/22/09 - his blood work from last year was perfect, he eats good, he is pooping fine - any thoughts?

Cindy and Sleeping George

Forum: Japanese Chin Discussion

SNACKS, how often

yeah, how often are you feeding snacks? I had Mikan on a pretty regular pattern but with Kenji I'm not sure if the snacks are going to be too much/too often. He didn't like blueberry (antioxidants) treats at all so I took those back to Pet Smart. He likes training treats that are soft and chicken flavored.

Looking for ideas so I can pick something else up for him. Any suggestions? Also, how many times a day are you giving snacks? He's almost 10 pounds and looks a little skinny - I don't like to feel his bones! He'll be 1 year on Nov. 15th.

Debbie and Kenji

Forum: Dinner Time
